Do the right thing, even thought we can’t force you. (Hospitals)

….Epps can’t be compelled to be more transparent. But if at all possible, she should be more forthcoming anyway, because it’s the right thing to do.

That has no bearing on the validity of the suit. If it turns out she has a deep-pocketed benefactor, perhaps one of Halifax’s competitors, that wouldn’t change the fundamental issue of whether Halifax has the legal authority to operate outside its taxing district. But that information would present more context for the dispute — two health care heavyweights battling over turf, rather than simply a citizen standing up for taxpayers.

In an interview with The News-Journal’s editorial board two weeks ago, Feasel expressed confidence that his hospital was on solid legal ground to expand outside its taxing district, and suggested that HCA was merely using attorney fees to bleed Halifax financially, saying that “it seems to be a model that they’ve used elsewhere.”…
